Social Bookmarking 101

*
You know, since the beginning of internet there are little stars or shapes that indicate our favorite websites or the website that we don't want to loose. But have you ever thought sharing those stars with the people you love, your students or colleagues and see their bookmarks and creating a new universe with those stars? Now you can. The "Social Bookmarking" allows us to share, collect or save these this links. Pretty cool stuff ha? So let's dig in a little bit more.

As all needs of humanity did, social bookmarking was created to feed the hunger of internet users. Let's look why it was created.

  • When you bookmark a site, you can not reach it from another computer. (You can, web browsers have this kind of applications but they slow the browsers down.) So basically you can't reach your personal bookmarks from your office computers.
  • Using a lot of different browsers can be hard, in order to find what you need you have to search thorough different browsers.
  • Adding tons of bookmarks can slow your browser
What are the best social bookmarking websites on the web?

Diigo, Stumpleupon, Reddit, Delicous, Furl, Mr.Wrong and Digg are the well known bookmarking websites. And for Turkish users, there is gityat

Let's talk about Diigo

**
Diigo is the first social bookmarking site that I have ever used thanks to my mentor. It allows us bookmark websites (You don't say mate?) and share them. My favorite feature is that you can highlight sentences or links or whatever are on the website and add notes to relevant points. Which are saved, so you can see your notes and highlighted parts every time you go to that website.

How can teachers use social bookmarking and this website?

As this is a blog that an English teachers uses, there should be a relevance between me and this article.

We, the good teachers have a lot of books, notes and websites we use in order to lecture students best. Think you go to a website that had a lot of good examples or lectures. You haven't clicked it since forever and forgot where the document was. Using these tools you wont.  Another example, the page is a long and boring page but using the highlighter that Diigo provides, you wont search it again.

You can send links to your students, and ask them their homeworks or summaries. Since they highlighted the important parts you wont waste time.
